Convert a Publisher file to PDF

A PDF of a Publisher document opens on any computer or phone, prints the same everywhere, and can be emailed to anyone. Here's how to make one from a .pub file without Publisher and without uploading the file anywhere.

Without Publisher, in your browser

  1. Go to publican.app and drop your .pub file on the page, or click Choose a file.
  2. Check the pages look right. If you want to change anything first, such as a date or a name, press Edit, make the change, then press Done.
  3. Open the Menu and choose Print or save as PDF.
  4. In the print window, choose to save as PDF instead of printing (see below for your browser), then save.

The PDF is named after the document, and each page of the publication becomes a page of the PDF.

For the closest match to Publisher, if you're on Chrome or Edge and have Microsoft Office installed, choose Use my installed fonts from the Menu before saving.

Why not an online converter?

Many free .pub to PDF converters are built on the same open-source .pub reader as LibreOffice, so they tend to share its mistakes. In our tests, LibreOffice laid out only 51% of pages without missing or misplaced content. Publican lays pages out with its own engine, built to match Publisher, and 97% of pages came out without defects.

Converters also upload your file to their server, and many limit free use to a few files a day or ask you to sign up. Publican converts the file inside your browser: it never leaves your device, and there's no limit.

If you still have Publisher

Choose File, then Save As, and pick PDF as the file type. If you have a lot of files and still have Publisher, it's worth converting the ones you care about now (see Publisher's retirement), and keeping the .pub originals too: they hold editable text and pictures that a PDF doesn't.

Common questions

Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's read and converted inside your browser tab and never sent anywhere.
Can I convert several files at once?
Not yet: open and save each one in turn.
Can I turn a PDF back into a .pub file?
No. Keep your .pub files as well as the PDFs. To keep editing a document in Publican, save it as a .publican file from the Menu while editing.
